Since 2002, Belgian law has provided several options regarding end-of-life decisions. This includes the possibility of engaging in advance care planning. If you wish, you can already, in consultation with your loved ones and healthcare provider(s), record your preferences concerning medical care and treatment at the end of life and/or in case you become incapacitated.
After creating such a care plan, you retain full control— meaning you can modify it at any time. You also have the option to designate one or more representatives or witnesses who will help safeguard your interests and ensure that your care plan is followed when it becomes relevant due to your health situation or at the end of life.
In our experience, advance care planning can bring peace of mind both to the patient and their loved ones.
We therefore encourage you to consider it.

Have you never been vaccinated against measles, or only received one dose, and never had the disease yourself? Then it is recommended to complete your vaccination.
Not sure if you’ve been vaccinated? Since 2006, vaccination records have been stored digitally. You can check your vaccination status at www.mijngezondheid.be. Can’t find all your records there? Take a look at your vaccination booklet or contact your GP.
Born before 1970? Measles was still widespread in Flanders at that time. People born before 1970 are generally considered immune, as they most likely had the disease in childhood.
Born between 1980 and 1990? People aged 30 to 40 are at increased risk of insufficient protection. They often didn’t contract measles and were not always fully vaccinated as children.
Not fully vaccinated and never had measles?
Then you may be eligible for a free catch-up vaccination.

Starting in 2025, the cervical cancer screening programme in Flanders will be updated. Women between the ages of 30 and 64 will receive an invitation every five years to take an HPV test. This test detects the human papillomavirus (HPV)— the virus that can cause cervical cancer — and is more sensitive than the traditional Pap test used until now.
With this change, Flanders is aligning itself with the European guidelines for cervical cancer screening.
